PEACOCK ATX
FOUNDER: ANNIE COBB
WHY DO YOU CALL AUSTIN HOME
I call Austin home after landing here 23 years ago hoping to put down roots. My family lives in Houston so I didn’t want to be too far away after living in California for many years. Plus my daughter is a proud Austinite so that pretty much sealed the deal:)
FAVORITE SONG/ARTIST/ALBUM OR SPARK OF CREATIVITY
Right now Earth, Wind and Fire is my go to station. Any time we play it at the salon it brings everyone’s spirits up. Also, New Orleans Jazz has my heart this time of year.
BIGGEST DEBATE OF ALL: COFFEE Or TEA, BE SPECIFIC ;)
Tea. I was and still am a coffee lover but tea keeps me level. Coffee on vacations and holidays!
WHO DO YOU FOLLOW FOR INSTAGRAM INSPIRATION
I love the Jungalow! I’m all about making a space with feel good vibes. I also like to follow local women owned businesses, feminist inspired sites, food, art. I’ve found several of my vendors through IG.
GO TO MID-DAY SNACK Or ROUTINE FOR CREATIVE FUEL
Mr. Natural! I looove their breakfast tacos and veggie chorizo. I’ll buy two and have one for lunch. Once a week we splurge and order pizza for the shop from our neighbors, Bufalina. Omg, it’s heaven.
WHERE DO YOU CREATE THE BEST? EX: SALON, HOME, STUDIO, NATURE, ETC.
Travel inspires me most to create . I love going to different countries to see what’s happening. Also, getting together with my besties and having an art day. Right now we want to make everything from shibori dyeing to ceramics!
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO OPEN PEACOCK
I chose to open Peacock because I realized I loved being my own boss and wanted to create a space that felt good for our clients.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST EXCITING MOMENT SO FAR OF PEACOCK
The most exciting moment is now! We will be celebrating 12 years this year.
HOW DO YOU MAKE SURE YOUR BRAND STANDS OUT
A really big sign?! I’m not much for putting the business out there - it’s always been a quieter thing (besides our signage).
WHO HAS HAD THE MOST CREATIVE INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE
My husband, daughter and friends...absolutely. They open my eyes to new inspiration daily.
HOW HAS SOCIAL HELPED YOUR BRAND AFTER BEING IN AUSTIN FOR OVER 10 YEARS
Social media is amazing- i love it! It’s a whole new way of connecting with other businesses and artists. It helps small business thrive and get your name out there without selling your soul. It’s recently helped get the word out about our apothecary part of the shop!
WHAT OTHER ARTISTS HAVE YOU LOVED COLLABORATING WITH, IF ANY
We’ve had the good fortune of having several artists hang their work in our space. The amazing Virginia Fleck, Caroline Wright, as well as Crockett High School Honors Art for EAST one year.
TELL US ABOUT THE PRODUCTS YOU CHOOSE TO USE IN THE SALON
I look for products that are as clean as possible, give back to the environment in some way, preferably local and women owned.
HOW IMPORTANT IS SHOPPING LOCAL TO YOU
As a small business owner I know the importance of shopping local. One can buy pretty much anything from Amazon these days but you loose the authenticity of something hand crafted. When you buy local you’re supporting your community.
HOW HAS THE AUSTIN COMMUNITY SUPPORTED YOU
This question makes me tear up a bit- peacock would be no where without the support of this community. I owe the last twelve years to our amazing support system-our clients. Some of our clients are pre-peacock going back 20 years! I can’t thank them enough.
WOULD YOU BE OPEN TO A COLLAB WITH A LOCAL AUSTIN ARTIST
Absolutely, it would have to be local. I’m currently looking for art work for our walls - so yes!
WHAT IS ONE THING YOU WISH PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT PEACOCK
One thing I wish folks knew about Peacock...it’s always been more than hair. It’s about the people who sit in our chairs and enrich our lives daily. We take that experience home with us and it makes us better people for it. And in return we want to do the same for them.
EVERYTHING YOU’VE CREATED WITH PEACOCK IS DONE WITH SUCH INTENTIONALITY, FROM THE PRODUCTS IN THE APOTHECARY TO THE INTERIOR DECORATIONS TO THE STYLISTS, TALK TO US MORE ABOUT THAT
The thought is that one can come in to Peacock and feel instantly comfortable. Being greeted by our team, plopping on the oversized seating, listening to good tunes, while enjoying the vintage lighting and apothecary items is all a part of that. The products I choose to sell are important to me personally and need to have certain standards. I’m excited to continue to explore and grow this part of the business. There are so many wonderful artists and lines I want to bring into the shop!
AUSTIN LOCAL INSIDER RECOMMENDATIONS
FAVORITE LOCAL FOOD TRUCK
Most of the food trucks we love are brick and mortars now! Garage Mahal, East Side Kings, and Pueblo Viejo to name a few. Good for them!! Veracruz and Cúrcuma are some favs as well :))
FAVORITE LOCAL CURATED BOUTIQUE
Solid Gold is my go to- Katie has great style! I’m super excited The Onikas are sharing space with her now! I miss popping into JM dry goods on Lamar! Michelle brings beautiful textiles back from Oaxaca- her space is open by appointment only now here on the east side. Raven and Lily is another favorite. Beautiful goods crafted by women around the globe. I could go on...
FAVORITE LOCAL COFFEE SHOP(S)
Since I don’t do much coffee these days I’m a bit out of the loop. I popped in to Figure 8 the other morning to get coffee for my daughter and made friends with a beautiful Great Dane named Celia (I think?!).
MUST-SEE RECOMMENDATION(S) FOR THOSE TRAVELING TO AUSTIN
Our local lines! Texas Medicinals, Herbalogics, Lightwellco candles, Planet Bonnie jewelry, Mary Louise Butters brownies, and Del Jardin rich herbal cream all make wonderful gifts while supporting local small businesses;)
